    • Family legend has it that Tench and Effie were penpals. She decided to travel from Brevard to TX to visit him, but they had never seen one another. When she got off the train, he walked up to her and asked her if she was Miss Effie Brooks. When she said that yes, she was, he gave a big smile and said, "Ma'am, I knowed it was you." (some of the family evidently did not appreciate the grammar! :) ) Tench was a farmer, also enjoyed growing cactus 9re Barbara Barton Middleton.
